Every ending is a new beginning

21. September 2021

In the past 15 years active competitive sports with all its ups and downs has kept me on the move, has challenged me to the fullest, has left its imprints. As I look back now, I see an emotional journey, where I was able to push boundaries but also have been shown my own limits. Ski jumping has given me incredible joy and the possibility to acquire experiences and knowledge. It has been a unique and emotionally intense journey and this journey now continues in a new direction.

The last months have been quite challenging for me, but in a positive way. Due to my break because of my latest injury (Brotterode), I had enough time and distance to reflect on the past and to find out where I am standing right now. After all I´ve been through as a high performance athlete the decision to end my career as an active athlete was not an easy one at all – but the decision feels right as does its moment.

I´m filled with pride and joy having been able to live my dream throughout my life. Through high-performance sports I have developed as a human, I got the chance to meet fascinating personalities and I will keep countless incredible moments and memories forever in my heart.

I´m deeply thankful to my parents, my family and my friends for their support and for always giving me the feeling of doing the right thing. Especially at the beginning of my career, my mother and father had renounced a lot and had put aside their concerns and interests. They have worked tirelessly in the background, without them I would have never ever come so far.

I really much appreciate the support of my coaches and my partners who literally gave me wings. They have formed me, pushed me, caught me up but never bent me. I´m furthermore thankful to the Austrian Ski Federation and the Olympiazentrum Tirol, all the staff, coaches and doctors, all my teammates and the many inspiring people I got the possibility to meet on and off the jumping hills.

One special part who has permanently created headwind for me and has always boosted me are you: my fans. Regardless of my performance, my appearance or behavior or my mood you have always believed in me. You have stood by me in difficult times, you have encouraged me to take and grow on challenges. This connection that has developed over the years I value more than any victory – it´s a privilege to me. As you have encouraged me, I would like to encourage you: believe in you and your dreams, follow your path regardless how challenging it might be. It´s absolutely worth it.

The fire within that has always burned to the fullest for my sport, takes me now to new challenges which are waiting for me. I turn the page and start this new chapter of life filled with passion, curiosity and zest for action.

Thank you for everything, stay safe and true to yourself. Knowingly I don´t say goodbye; I say See You - wherever, whenever – I´m looking forward to it.

Yours,
Gregor
